PRIVATE ART THERAPY WITH ADULTS
Art making provides expression of feelings that are difficult to explain in words. Emotions can be worked through whilst exploring symbolic elements of the art. Being alongside an Art Therapist, gives an opportunity for us to work with the meaning of the art from your perspective and talk through issues when you feel ready.
Art Therapy is not based on set tasks or projects and you do not need to have any specific artistic skill. You may develop a new interest in art or keep this to sessions. Some individuals already enjoy art and in addition to exploring complex feelings they develop new artistic approaches in the context of Art Therapy.
There is not a limit to issues that Art Therapy can support. Some examples of what Art Therapy can help with are :
- Perinatal mental health
- Neurodivergence
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Low self-esteem
- Family dynamics
- Trauma
- Bereavement
- Coping with illness
- Communication difficulties
How to I make an enquiry about starting Art Therapy?
Enquires can be made via email or my contact form which can be found this website in the section "My Background". When you make an initial enquiry about online or face to face Art Therapy, a free 15-minute telephone consultation is offered. This allows us to consider reasons for seeking therapy and provides you an opportunity to ask any initial questions about Art Therapy
If I do not consider I am the right therapist to offer a service at that time I will let you know and offer recommendations if any.
The next stage if you decide to go ahead with therapy.
Before Art Therapy begins I will require will some details. All information and the content of therapy is according to the confidentiality policy. This has some exceptions, which I will explain at the initial enquiry. Once you consent to the agreement for therapy we can go ahead with sessions.
What happens with the Artwork?
I will confidentially store your artwork until therapy completes, however there maybe times when you want to take the art with you. It will be your choice at the end of therapy if you would like to keep the artwork.
If your sessions are online you would take care of your own artwork.
Where do Private Art Therapy sessions take place?
I have an Art Therapy room based in central Hull at K2 Bond Street (HU1 3EN). My room is on a low floor of the building, access is secure with a reception area. I can explain more details when we book in your first session. There are several low cost options for parking nearby. The Hull train and bus station are also in close vicinity.
How is online Art Therapy provided?
My professional guidelines recommend using Zoom as it provides a suitable level of security to protect client confidentiality. Sessions are not permitted to be recorded either by myself or the client.
Is online Art Therapy suitable for everybody?
Certain circumstances are required in terms of maintaining your sessions are confidential. This would mean a consistent, private space that would not be interrupted. If you do not think privacy is something you can guarantee when attending online sessions, this approach will not be suitable.
A reliable Wi-Fi connection is needed. There maybe times when this unavoidable and we will discuss a plan if the Wi-Fi signal is lost during the session.
Similar to criteria of other therapists, my approach of working online may not be appropriate in some circumstances. Online Art Therapy is a different experience compared to face to face sessions and certain protective factors will be considered with you before starting online Art Therapy.
What can online Art Therapy offer?
If you are already a creative person, the approach of online sessions can be a way of connecting with art making differently. As with in person therapy, art included in the process maybe images or models created in your own time. The creative process is according to your choice of art media. Sometimes themes can be explored through talking metaphorically and descriptive imaginary stories. The process develops in a way that is individual to you.
An advantage of online therapy is that it can be supportive if you have time limitations, i.e attending my Art Therapy room in person for sessions. It maybe the experience of communication feels more comfortable than face to face.
What are timescales of Art Therapy sessions when meeting Online or in person?
The timing of sessions, frequency and confidentiality is the same for online and in person Art Therapy. Each session is 60 minutes duration.
Trust within the therapeutic relationship is a gradual process. I recommend the initial plan to be at least 3 to 5 sessions. This provides time to see if you think Art Therapy may be the right support for you. If I consider Art Therapy sessions would not be helpful beyond the initial stage, I will share this with you and make recommendations if required.
Everyone has their own reasons for seeking therapy and timescales are according to individual need. This is something we will review at stages in therapy. Any issues that led you to choose Art Therapy for support will be explored when you feel ready and at your pace.
